BAROK

The Origin is a site-specific work conceived for Sujets à Vif/Festival d'Avignon, an artistic creation in collaboration between authors and interpreters, created by Sonia Brunelli (performer) and Leila Gharib (musician) in collaboration with Londoner director Simon Vincenzi. Presented exclusively outdoors in the Jardin de la Vierge du Lycèe Saint Joseph in Avignon, then replicated inside the Hall of Honor of Palazzo Massari in Ferrara, and again in the ballroom of the Villa Revedin Bolasco of Castelfranco Veneto and on the ground floor of the fifteenth-century Palazzo Albertini in Forlì. The action comes from a sound closed inside a room and from its endless replication. The figure is an interpreter who translates the dictation of his thought into a physical writing. Proceed oblique, it loses its centrality until it crosses out of the scene. "The Origin" is a figure movement that never stops, propelled by the pulsating repetition of a static minor chord. The progression of the sound, produced by the overdubbing of a metallic and crackling timbre, intensifies and distorts with the advancement of the figure, as if guided by an obstinate knock and controlled by a continuous bass of whistles. The figure consequently changes form, opening up a dialogue between inside and outside, between what acts and what is perceived.

Awarded the MONDO Prize 2010 "for the radical nature of a research capable of creating affective resonances, a powerful imaginary, closely connected with a conscious dimension of sound presence. The Origin is a work on an anonymous figure coming from an unknown 'before' where complex and shared imaginaries collapse. The specificity of a peculiar rhythm of repetition, the effective dimension of reversibility of the action, emerges through exactness of presence, stripped of any formal mannerism. A point of extreme strength is the figure-space-duration relationship, capable of layering levels of atmospheric intensity, thanks to a unique gestural language and a rhythmic dynamic free from any recognizable choreographic grammar".
